In a poignant and solemn ceremony, the 1st Shankill Somme Association proudly unveiled the newly transformed Shankill War Memorial Garden on Saturday, February 21st, 2009.
This remarkable tribute to the valiant men of the 36th Ulster Division and all Irish soldiers who served and perished during the Great War of 1914-1918 stands as a testament to their bravery and sacrifice.
Months of tireless effort went into the metamorphosis of the former Adam & Eve garden into what is now known as the Garden of Reflection.
The association, driven by a deep sense of respect and duty, dedicated countless hours to renovating the space into a place of serene remembrance.
The garden’s central focus is a stunning memorial wall adorned with two glass panels that gracefully depict the silhouettes of British soldiers from World War I.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that the 1st Shankill Somme Association accomplished it without any external funding.
The project was fuelled by the unwavering support of its members and the local community, who recognized the importance of commemorating those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The solemnity of the occasion was palpable as the main parade formed on Northumberland Street, marching proudly up the historic Shankill Road toward the newly inaugurated memorial garden.
Leading the procession was the evocative sound of the UVF Regimental Band, setting a poignant tone for the somber event.
In attendance were not only members of the 1st Shankill Somme Association but also representatives from various Somme Associations and ex-army veterans associations.
The youthful presence of the Navy Sea Cadets added a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of service and sacrifice.
The atmosphere was hushed as Reverend Edith Cleary stepped forward to unveil the Garden of Reflection.
A moment of silence enveloped the gathered crowd as they paid their respects to those who laid down their lives for their country.
Heartfelt speeches paying tribute to the fallen heroes were delivered, and a solemn wreath-laying ceremony was conducted with the accompaniment of a piper’s mournful tune.
As the ceremony unfolded, hundreds of spectators gathered outside the gates, their presence a testament to the enduring respect and appreciation for those who gave their lives for the cause of freedom.
The transformation of the old Adam & Eve garden into the Garden of Reflection marks a powerful step in ensuring that the sacrifices made by the brave men of the 36th Ulster Division and all Irish soldiers who served during the Great War are never forgotten.
The memorial garden stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the deep-rooted sense of duty that has shaped generations.
