Honouring the Sacrifice of UDR Soldiers Slain in IRA Attack, 35 Years On.
23rd February 2023
In a poignant tribute that stands as a testament to unwavering courage, a memorial service was held on the 35th anniversary of a heart-wrenching tragedy that occurred during the dark days of Northern Ireland’s Troubles.
The parade and service which took place on 23rd February 2023 commemorated the lives of Private James Cummings and Private Fred Starrett, both 22 years old, who were ruthlessly taken from the world by an IRA attack on February 24th, 1988, while securing the security gates on Belfast City Centre’s Royal Avenue.
Organized by the Ulster Defenders of the Realm LOL710, the memorial service paid tribute to the indomitable spirit of the fallen soldiers.
A procession of groups, including UDR veterans and esteemed members of the Orange Order, solemnly commenced from Templemore Avenue in East Belfast, marching steadfastly to Royal Avenue where the tragic incident unfolded.
Leading the act of remembrance was Reverend Mervyn Gibson MBE, who eloquently guided the attendees in honouring the memory of these valiant young soldiers.
The commemoration included a significant participation by the 1st Shankill Somme Association. Walter Lyons, the Chairman of the association, placed a wreath of honour beside the names of PTE Cummings and PTE Starrett, surrounded by wreaths offered by other compassionate groups.
The haunting melody of a piper’s lament filled the air as these symbolic wreaths were placed, evoking a somber atmosphere that spoke volumes about the sacrifices made by these brave souls.
An unbroken moment of silence reverberated through the assembled crowd, a heartfelt gesture embodying the profound respect held for the fallen soldiers and their selfless service.
The annual memorial service resonates deeply, a poignant reminder of the immense sacrifices borne by those who steadfastly served in the UDR throughout the turbulent years of the Troubles.
It is a call to never forget the unwavering dedication and the ultimate price paid by individuals like PTE Cummings and PTE Starrett.
Tragically, the deaths of these two soldiers serve as a grim reminder of the lasting wounds inflicted by the Troubles upon Northern Ireland.
As the years pass, the service takes on renewed significance, becoming not just a remembrance of the past but a rallying cry for healing and reconciliation. The profound impact of the Troubles serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to bridge divisions and pave a path toward unity and understanding.
