Annual Remembrance Service Honours Heroes of the Great War and Battle of the Somme
In a heartfelt tribute to the brave souls who served during the Great War of 1914-1918 and particularly those who fought valiantly in the Battle of the Somme, the 1st Shankill Somme Association came together for their annual service of remembrance.
The event, held with deep respect and gratitude, aimed to ensure that the sacrifices made by these courageous individuals are never forgotten.
The sombre day commenced with a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial in Woodvale Park.
A touching display of unity and remembrance, this solemn act was a testament to the enduring memory of the 36th Ulster Division and all who served alongside them.
The memorial stood as a symbol of the gratitude felt by the community for the sacrifices made during those trying times.
Following the wreath-laying, the focus shifted to Northumberland Street, where the main parade commenced its solemn journey up the historic Shankill Road.
Guiding the procession was the stirring melody of the Shankill Protestant Boy’s Flute Band, leading the way with their moving music.
The procession culminated at the Shankill War Memorial, located adjacent to the Shankill Graveyard. Here, a poignant service of remembrance was conducted under the guidance of Rev Colin Duncan.
The participants paid their respects by laying wreaths, accompanied by the soul-stirring notes of a piper.
The haunting sound of the bugler playing the Last Post added a poignant touch to the proceedings, reminding all present of the gravity of the moment and the lives that were lost.
The event was attended by a multitude of individuals from the Somme Association and esteemed ex-servicemen, who came to pay their respects and honour the memory of those who served on the battlefield.
The presence of re-enactment soldiers and nurses added a tangible connection to the past, allowing attendees to gain a glimpse into the realities faced by the brave souls who put their lives on the line.
