The 1st Shankill Somme Association embarked on a poignant journey to commemorate the valorous legacy of Lieutenant Colonel Paddy Mayne, a distinguished British Army officer, and one of the founding members of the esteemed Special Air Service (SAS). On Saturday, August 19, 2023, the association paid their respects to this legendary World War II hero by visiting his grave and engaging in a day of remembrance and camaraderie.
Lt Col Paddy Mayne, widely recognized as Paddy Maine, was born on January 11, 1915, in Newtownards.
His life story is a tapestry of extraordinary achievements that spanned rugby, boxing, law, and the military.
Throughout the Second World War, Mayne earned his place as one of the British Army’s most decorated soldiers, though his controversial denial of a Victoria Cross left a lingering mark on his legacy.
The day of commemoration commenced with the members and guests of the 1st Shankill Somme Association gathering at the statue of Paddy Mayne in Newtonards’ main square. This iconic statue stands as a testament to Mayne’s unyielding courage and service.
From there, the group moved to the tranquil Movilla Cemetery, where Lt Col Paddy Mayne rests in eternal peace. A wreath was solemnly laid at his grave, honouring his memory and sacrifice.
During the course of the visit, the attendees were enriched with fascinating insights into the life and contributions of Paddy Mayne.

Continuing their day of commemoration, the association members journeyed to Portavogie in County Down, where they visited the ‘Beyond The Battlefield’ centre.
This charity, dedicated to the well-being of ex-service personnel across both parts of Ireland, has made it its mission to address the challenges of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that afflict many veterans.
Beyond The Battlefield focuses on providing a range of services, including counselling and support, to those who have served their country.
The organization’s commitment to enhancing communication and advocating for the rights and entitlements of ex-service individuals and their families aligns seamlessly with their noble cause.
At the centre, the 1st Shankill Somme Association had the opportunity to connect with fellow members of other Somme Associations, fostering a sense of unity among those who appreciate the sacrifices of war heroes like Paddy Mayne.
The visit culminated with a generous donation made by the Chairman of the 1st Shankill Somme Association, Walter Lyons, affirming their support for Beyond The Battlefield’s invaluable work.
