The 1st Shankill Somme Association marked an unforgettable annual remembrance parade and service on Saturday, February 24th 2018, commemorating the valiant 36th Ulster Division and all those who sacrificed their lives during the poignant Battle of the Somme in the Great War of 1914-1918.
The poignant event, which honoured the past while embracing the present, began with the stirring notes of the rhythmic cadence of drums as the main parade commenced its solemn journey along the historic Shankill Road.
This reverent procession stretched from Northumberland Street to the War Memorial Garden nestled beside the Shankill Graveyard. At the forefront of this procession was the esteemed Shankill Road Defenders Flute Band.
Their steadfast march was joined by the stalwart members of the 1st Shankill Somme Association, who were joined by fellow compatriots from various Somme Associations hailing from Belfast, Carrickfergus, Banbridge, and the Govan Somme, who made a heartfelt journey from Glasgow.
The parade, a remarkable display of unity and remembrance, also welcomed the presence of living history as Great War reenactment soldiers donned the authentic uniforms of the era.
These dedicated enthusiasts brought the past to life, allowing present-day spectators to catch a glimpse of the courage and resilience that defined those who served a century ago.
Amidst the procession, women dressed in nurses’ uniforms from the same era evoked a poignant tribute to the unwavering dedication of medical personnel who tended to the wounded and brought comfort to the afflicted.
As the parade progressed, the ranks swelled with a sense of shared purpose and collective memory.
Veterans from the local Ex-Servicemen’s Association stood shoulder to shoulder with the distinguished members of the Orange Order, underscoring the enduring legacy of sacrifice and service that binds the community together.
The heartrending remembrance service was led by the Reverend Smith, whose eloquent words resonated through the crowd, serving as a poignant reminder of the selflessness exhibited by those who fought during the Battle of the Somme.
Against a backdrop of somber respect, wreaths were reverently laid, accompanied by the haunting melodies of the bagpipes.
These melancholic strains captured the essence of the occasion, underscoring the depth of gratitude felt by all those in attendance.
As the service drew to a close, the 1st Shankill Somme Association extended heartfelt appreciation to all who participated in this commemorative event.
Their collective commitment to preserving the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice remains unwavering. Looking ahead, the association eagerly anticipates the next year’s memorial parade, where once again, the past and present will converge in a moving tribute to valor and sacrifice.
The poignant strains of “The Last Post” hung in the air, resonating with the memories of the past and serving as a poignant reminder that the spirit of the Battle of the Somme endures in the hearts and minds of the Shankill community and beyond.
