Established in the year 2000, the 1st Shankill Somme Association was born out of a profound commitment to ensure that the valorous deeds of our forebears are never consigned to oblivion. At our core, we hold a deep reverence for the courageous souls who fought and fell, upholding the honour of the 36th Ulster Division and all the Irish Regiments, preserving the ideals of liberty and peace.
In 2009, we unveiled our poignant War Memorial Garden in the heart of the Woodvale, a living testament to the sacrifices made by countless individuals who answered the call of duty. This serene sanctuary serves as a haven of remembrance, a tranquil space where we pay homage to the lives lost and the resilience shown. The garden stands not only as a dedication to the 36th Ulster Division but also as a solemn tribute to all those who have shouldered arms in defense of their fellow countrymen.
Beyond preserving the past, the 1st Shankill Somme Association embodies a shared commitment to foster understanding, compassion, and unity among communities. As we remember the bravery of all Irish men and women who gave their all, we strive to bridge the divide of time, ensuring that their stories inspire us to be better, more empathetic citizens of a shared world.
Through a tapestry of commemorative events and educational undertakings, we weave the stories of heroism and sacrifice into the fabric of our collective memory. We remember the harrowing tales of the battlefront, the resilience in the face of adversity, and the camaraderie that bound them together. From the trenches of the Great War to the battlefields of WW2 and beyond, we stand united in honoring those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms.
With every moment of reflection and every gesture of remembrance, we ensure that the valor of the past remains eternally relevant, guiding us towards a future illuminated by the virtues of courage, unity, and peace.
The 1st Shankill Somme Association Memorial Garden can be found next to the Shankill Graveyard on the Woodvale Road / Shankill Road, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The garden is open to everyone during 9am to 5pm everyday.
