Despite the ongoing challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the 1st Shankill Somme Association paid solemn tribute to the memory of the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 2021.
The association’s members gathered at the Shankill War Memorial Garden for a moving memorial service, marking the anniversary of the historic battle that took place on the fields of France on the 1st July 1916.
In a poignant ceremony, the short service was conducted at the Shankill War Memorial Garden, where a wreath was laid to honour the sacrifices made by the 36th Ulster Division and all Irish men and women who valiantly fought and tragically perished during the Battle of the Somme.
The participants then joined the main parade, which solemnly marched through the streets of Belfast to reach the Cenotaph at Belfast City Hall.
There, a larger service of remembrance was held, uniting the community in paying respects to the fallen heroes.
The Battle of the Somme, a significant chapter in the history of Ulster and the rest of the UK, holds deep meaning for both nations.
This year’s event, however, was noticeably scaled down due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Safety measures were adhered to diligently, with participants respecting social distancing guidelines to ensure the well-being of all attendees.
Highlighting their commitment to preserving history, the 1st Shankill Somme Association also took the opportunity to unveil their newest mural in the War Memorial Garden.
The mural, an artistic representation of Sir Edward Carson and key imagery associated with the formation of Northern Ireland in 1921, serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal moments in Northern Ireland’s history.
This mural joins two others, completing a trio of artistic tributes within the memorial garden.
Speaking at the event, association President Jim Black, expressed his appreciation for the community’s unwavering support despite the challenges.
The emphasized the importance of remembering and honouring the sacrifices made by the generations that came before, while also acknowledging the need to adapt and prioritize safety in the face of the ongoing pandemic.
As the sun set on the day’s events, the combination of solemn remembrance and resilient spirit left a lasting impression on all who participated.
