As the sun rose over the serene landscapes of France, members of the 1st Shankill Somme Association embarked on a solemn journey to honour the memory of the 36th Ulster Division on the 95th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
In a poignant pilgrimage to historic battlefields and memorials, the association’s members and guests paid tribute to the valour and sacrifice of those who fought in one of the most pivotal moments of World War I.
The delegation’s journey led them to hallowed grounds like the Thiepval Tower, where the imposing structure stands as a testament to the lives lost during the battle.
The haunting echoes of history reverberated at the Menin Gate in Ypres, and sombre moments were shared at the Mill Road and Connaught Cemetery.
However, it was the Ulster Tower that became the centrepiece of their journey, where they joined a poignant memorial parade and service on the 1st of July.
Among the emotional highlights was the visit to Thiepval Wood, where the trenches still bear the scars of the valiant attack launched by the 36th Ulster Division.
Here, history came alive, as the members walked the same paths their forebears had, gaining a visceral understanding of the challenges faced and the sacrifices made.
One of the remarkable aspects of this year’s commemoration was the inclusion of young men, eager to learn about history and witness firsthand the places where brave soldiers made their mark.
The association took on the role of custodians, passing down stories that must never be forgotten, ensuring that the legacy of courage continues to inspire future generations.
The main remembrance service at the Ulster Tower was a poignant gathering, bringing together not just the members of the association but also British Army soldiers and representatives of the Orange Order.
It was a powerful demonstration of unity in remembering those who gave their all for a higher cause.
Tragically, many men who perished on the first day of the Battle of the Somme hailed from the Greater Shankill area.
For some of the members, the battle’s echoes hit close to home, as they had family members who served and paid the ultimate price.
It’s a connection that deepens the association’s commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices of those brave souls remain vivid in the collective memory.
The 1st Shankill Somme Association’s pilgrimage to France serves as an enduring reminder of the valour and sacrifice exhibited during the Battle of the Somme.
The journey continues to inspire a new generation to appreciate the significance of history and to honour the legacy of those who selflessly gave their lives for a brighter future.
