The 1st Shankill Somme Association held its poignant annual service of remembrance on July 1, 2023, marking the solemn occasion of the first day of the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916, and paying tribute to the heroic legacy of the 36th Ulster Division.
The event drew participants and spectators from across the region, coming together to honour the sacrifices made during one of the most significant battles of World War I.
Amidst a backdrop of reverence and solemnity, a wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Shankill War Memorial Garden.
The commemorative wreath, adorned with poppies, was carefully placed as a symbol of remembrance for the fallen soldiers who bravely fought during the Battle of the Somme.
The wreath symbolized the enduring respect and gratitude for the sacrifices that shaped history.
Following the wreath-laying, attendees joined a grand parade that proceeded to march to the cenotaph located at Belfast City Hall.
The parade was a sombre yet powerful spectacle, with participants dressed in British Army uniforms that harked back to the Great War era.
Additionally, women adorned in nurses’ uniforms from the same era walked alongside, paying homage to the crucial role they played in providing care and support during those tumultuous times.
The service of remembrance at the cenotaph was a moving testament to the enduring memory of the 36th Ulster Division.
Wreaths were laid by various representatives, accompanied by the mournful yet resonant tones of a piper playing.
The poignant notes of the “Last Post” were skilfully played by a bugler, the haunting melody drifting through the air, evoking a sense of deep reflection.
Throughout the event, speeches were delivered, delving into the history and significance of the Battle of the Somme.
Attendees listened attentively as speakers recounted the valour displayed by the soldiers and the impact their sacrifices had on the course of history.
The speeches served as a bridge connecting the past to the present, reminding all present of the price that was paid for freedom and peace.
The parade culminated in a march back up the historic Shankill Road, culminating at a memorial situated beside the Rex Bar.
Here, yet another service of remembrance took place, completing the day of tributes and commemorations.
